Jingle Bell Brighton Rocks!
Brighton and Hove elderly legends Disco Pete and Dancing Ann are an inspiration to us all and we figured Christmas is a good time to get together and enjoy some music with them. So we gathered together some of Brighton’s finest (The Brighton Belles) and recorded a Christmas song, ‘Jingle Bell Brighton Rocks’!

In Brighton and Hove there are in the region of 7000 elderly people who live alone and don’t have any family or friends to visit them; as a result, they are left feeling invisible, forgotten and desperately lonely. And that’s just in one city – imagine how many people that adds up to across the UK! It’s heartbreaking to think how many undiscovered Anns and Petes are living behind closed doors.
Time to Talk Befriending (TTTB) meets amazing older people every day who have a rich life history to share. The charity witnesses first hand how befriending can literally transform lives; its elderly members say they have a renewed interest in life and the volunteers find it just as rewarding. Just a small gesture of human contact can lift a lonely person’s spirit!

Where does your money go?
- Homemade Christmas Dinners and deliveries for TTTB members who are on their own and can’t get out costs £10.00 per person. This is part of this year’s ‘Thinking of you at Christmas’ campaign.
- On the 14th December TTTB is bringing 100 members together who might otherwise be housebound due to limiting health conditions to the Sussex Cricket Ground for a Christmas meal, just transporting these people in mini buses and cabs costs around £500.
- TTTB is sending out hand-made personalised cards by local primary children to our scheme members. They have some amazing volunteers who deliver these free of charge however will still need to post around 100 cards – at 2nd class that is a cost of £54.00.
- The Office for National Statistics recently estimated the annual value of regular formal volunteering to be £23.9 billion. TTTB has 150 volunteer befrienders so @ £14.20 per hour (av. cost of volunteering) x 4 hours per month, the potential savings are £8,640.00 per annum. The monthly running costs for Time to Talk Befriending are currently in the region of £5K per month. They also desperately need a part time volunteer coordinator and a full time scheme coordinator so additional salaries in the New Year will be required.
